Beauty Sleep & Science

February 10, 2012 by Wendei Leave a Comment

PeaceofMindSkincare.com-TipsandTechniques

An article from the archives that keeps catching our eye… from the BBC online in their health section:

Beauty sleep concept is not a myth, says study.

Could sleep be the “missing link” between beauty and health?

It looks like science is catching up with what we’ve always known, and seen!

Have you put sleep at the top of your list of priorities today, or tonight?

Please do… to let your body replenish your reserves, and look forward to your personal best becoming visible every day.

The Art of Extraction

February 9, 2012 by Wendei Leave a Comment

PeaceofMindSkincare.com-TipsandTechniques

I’ve been hearing from a lot of new clients the past few years that they’ve had facials from other estheticians who did not perform extractions.  Some of these estheticians told them that extractions are bad for the skin.  So what’s the real story?

First, let me explain what a blackhead really is.  It’s a plug consisting of dirt, oil and a buildup of dead skin cells that accumulate in a pore and get stuck.  No matter what anyone tells you, no matter what a product claims to do, once that plug has been formed, it won’t come out without some physical manipulation also known as extraction.

Most people get blackheads, even if they don’t have acne.  Blackheads in the nose and chin are the most common areas because we have more sebaceous (oil) glands in those areas.  Just because you get some blackheads doesn’t mean you’re a dirty person.  Yes, you can reduce them by cleansing properly twice a day, but there’s no way to completely prevent them.

But by getting monthly facials by a licensed esthetician who has been properly trained in and has lots of experience with extractions, you can substantially minimize those pesky blackheads.

Performing extractions is truly an art and my personal theory why many new estheticians are falsely telling people that they aren’t necessary or that they’re harmful is really because they themselves haven’t been properly trained and they’re afraid to perform them.

The skin must be properly prepared with steam, enzymes or some other product or technology to soften up the skin, dilate the pores and begin to dissolve the plug inside before the esthetician attempts to roll it out.  This is why extractions should never be attempted yourself in front of the bathroom mirror.

I’ve been an esthetician for more than 17 years and I can’t extract my own blackheads…and trust me, like you, I’ve tried.  The worst thing you can do is use a comedone extractor, one of those silver tools with a loop or hole on the end.  They hurt like you know what and they bruise the skin.

The only time I’ll use a comedone extractor in the treatment room is on the scalp or in and around the ears where I can’t get my fingers in to roll out the blackhead.

In summary, extractions are not only not bad for the skin, they’re necessary to keep pore size minimized and skin clean, but be sure and find an esthetician who is properly trained.

How to Wash Your Face

How To Wash Your Face

 Sounds pretty basic, huh?
But most people about to embark on serious skin care really don’t have a clue how to cleanse their skin properly or why it’s so important.  It’s important to cleanse our skin twice a day, in the morning and at night.  And no slapping on some cleanser and rinsing it off.
Just like our dentists teach us to spend a good two minutes brushing our teeth to get rid of food particles and prevent plaque and tartar, we need to do the same for our face.
  • Use a cleanser that’s right for your skin type (creamy for dry skin, gel or something more acidic for oily or problem skin) and really work it in.
  • Use your fingers or a Clarisonic brush and massage for a good minute and a half.  If you’re using an acid based cleanser like glycolic or salicylic, you’ll feel the tingle as you work the cleanser into your skin.
  • Use a white washcloth to rinse with water and you’ll be able to see if you’ve missed anything.
Our skin secretes oil while we’re sleeping so make sure and wash off the stickiness that contains excess oil and dirt in the morning and your makeup will go on much better and you’ll glow all day.
  • Don’t wait until you’re exhausted at 11:00 at night before washing off that makeup and the grime that comes with living in the city.
  • If you’re home at 7 and know you’re not going anywhere, wash your face then and apply your nighttime skin care products.
You’ll still have plenty of energy to play with the kids, read a book or watch your favorite show and your skin will thank you for it!
Tip:  Keep one cleanser next to your sink and another in the shower so whether you wash at the sink or in the shower you’ll always have your cleanser within reach.
